ABOUT US

Milner's Chapel has been rooted in the Greenhill Community for over 150 years. With a rich history, the members of
the Church strive to continue the legacy of it's founding members.
The history of Milner's Chapel dates back to 1870, when Mr. J.G. Bishop served as Pastor.
In April 1932, Edgar and Myrtle Kennedy gave land upon which Milner's Chapel was constructed. Members of the
Church handled construction, which was completed in the winter of 1932. During the construction, services were held at
the home of Mr. George Mercer, near a spring in the warmer months and in a tent during the colder months. This home sat
behind the Church site in the foothills of El Reposo Nursing Home. The bricks of the Church were hand forged by
members at H.L. Stutts water mill using sand, gravel, and cement. The members raised money for construction by
auctioning off items such as quilts and rugs, selling eggs, and having bake sales.

In 1946, a parsonage was constructed and furnished by the members of the Church. The women of the Church picked
cotton to pay for two bedroom suites. The parsonage was sold and moved in 1973. In 1948, the Church was wired
for electricity. In 1957-58 three classrooms were added in the basement of the Church. In the early 1960's a new piano
was purchased. The piano was paid for by the men and women of the church, volunteering a day's work and picking
cotton. In 1968, the Church sanctuary was remodeled including paneling the walls, new light fixtures, two new
classrooms, and carpeting. The remodel was paid for by donations from Church members. In 1971, running water
was added to the Church which included the addition of two bathrooms.

The Church has experienced significant changes since its inception, and been associated with five different
conferences: Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Episcopal Church South, The Methodist Church, United
Methodist Church, and Global Methodist Church.

In 2022, Milner's Chapel United Methodist Church became Milner's Chapel Methodist Church at the disaffiliation
from the United Methodist Church Conference.
As of September 2023, there are 67 members of the Church, many of which are descendants of
Edgar and Myrtle Kennedy.
